Libraries Lead With Digital Skills

The library will have a two-week run of computer classes starting July 20th. The classes will be offered on Zoom. They’ll be recorded and put on YouTube later, so if you can’t make the class time or aren’t comfortable on Zoom, you can just watch later. Some of the classes are for job-searchers or business owners, but many cover digital skills that anyone can use.

The classes will begin with Getting started with Google, a class covering how to set up a Google account and a look at all the free apps that you can use online with an account. We’ll also share some general advice about how to set up accounts online. Other digital skills classes are Digital skills for everyday tasks, Manage a project using digital tools, Free online learning with Learning Express and Lynda, and Collaborate, meet, and work remotely.

For job searchers, we’ll have classes on writing a resume, finding jobs online, and applying for jobs online. For resumes, one class will cover using an online resume builder and templates, and the second class will demonstrate creating a resume in Canva, an online graphic design program. We also have a job searchers chat group on Tuesdays.

For business owners or potential entrepreneurs, we have two classes. Get your local business on Google search and maps will show you how to set up a Google Business account, how to have your business show up in Google search, and how to show up on Google maps. The second is about managing a business remotely. A business can use online tools to connect with customers who can’t come into the shop or office. Business owners also might like Manage a project using digital tools and Collaborate, meet, and work remotely.

The last class will cover using Applied Digital Skills, a free online curriculum of video-based classes. These classes cover basic skills and build up to IT work skills. You can go through the lessons and only take the ones you want.

Anyone attending a class can enter a drawing to win a free professional resume review by Adrianne Gleeson of Advanced Development Insights. The winners will be notified after August 1st. If you don’t have Zoom, you can download it free here.
