[Virtual] McLib Live – Understanding the Significance of 911

Emergency dispatchers serve as a lifeline for people who find themselves in an emergency situation where seconds can mean the difference between life and death.

In this presentation Ms. Hood examines the role of the Paducah Police Department Communications Services Division. This vital organization answers 911 and non- emergency calls for Paducah Police Department, McCracken County Sheriff’s Department, the Paducah Fire Department and 9 volunteer Fire Departments. This Division will handle approximately 170,000 calls per year, or between 450-500 calls every day.  96% of all 911 calls are answered in less than 10 seconds and 100% of all calls in less than 20 seconds. This is well above the national average.

Ms. Hood retired from the Austin, Texas Police Department after 23 years in Emergency Communications. She came out of retirement in 2019 to head up the center here in Paducah.
